Her Loss: In a Nutshell

Davia Rode ’23 writes a pithy, well-informed review of the album that blew Taylor Swift off the charts: Her Loss.

Drake’s new album Her Loss has been a hot topic of conversation as listeners argue about its success. Renowned rapper, 21 Savage, features—adding the perfect calm voice paired with an absolutely brilliant flow. Drake, as always, starts off strong with the album opener “Rich Flex,” in which he and 21 Savage feed off one another as Drake asks “21, can you do sum’ for me?” to which 21 Savage responds with “21.” Adlibs like these from Savage create a natural and authentic ambiance that contributes to the classic rap that fans have missed from Drake in his past few albums. Her Loss brings fans back to the old, classic Drake, when he was releasing top hits left and right, like “All Me” and “Headlines.” Other listeners, however, describe this album as dull and repetitive. They argue that Drake is simply trying to release as much music as possible, focusing on quantity more than quality. Some reviews even go on to say that without 21, the album would be absolutely horrendous and that all of Drake’s solos are intolerable.

Nonetheless, his songs have held the top 14 spots of Top 100: USA and continue to stay on the charts day after day. With their best performances on “Spin Bout U,” “Major Distribution,” and “Rich Flex,” Savage and Drake prove just how well their voices complement one another to create a smooth, addicting sound.

Drake has become a fan favorite for over 10 years now, as fans watch him progress from album to album. Moving on from his previous albums Certified Lover Boy and Honestly, Nevermind, we get a new perspective as Drake overcomes his past emotional struggles and finds peace in carelessness and freedom. Overall, this album presents various new opportunities for Drake’s music and the possible artists that may feature in the future—though it’s going to be difficult to live up to the expectations set by 21 Savage. So, though there may be haters, it’s undeniable that this album is already proving to be more successful than they might ever be, revealing that Drake must be doing something right.
