Jealousy

Jealousy

Nailah Cannon ’24

Hi, I’m Nailah.  I’m a junior and I have been drawing since I was about five years old.  In middle school, I started to experiment with different mediums like water colors, oil pastels, oil paints, and acrylic paint, but in the end, I decided  that I liked acrylic paint the best, since I found them fairly easy to work with and I adored the vibrant colors and textures that could be created.  It was only in my freshman year that I started making digital art on Procreate.  Although my favorite medium is still acrylic paint, digital art still is special to me since in some ways, it can be easier to work with(like being able to easily erase smudges and use the “undo” button to quickly get rid of my mistakes).  As for my piece, I had started this piece originally as just a doodle on Procreate, not really expecting for it to go anywhere.  While I was drawing, I was listening to the SOUR album by Olivia Rodrigo, when one of the songs titled “jealousy, jealousy”, a song about insecurities and well, jealousy, had really inspired me.  It’s also one my favorite songs on the album, other than “brutal” and  “favorite crime”.  So, I thought it would be interesting to make  the subject look a bit jealous to reference the song.  I also included black sleeves as a nod to the ones Olivia wore in her music video for her song “Good 4 u”.
