It’s Poppy Playtime!
An examination of Poppy Playtime, a new puzzle-horror game known for its detail-oriented graphics.
Annabelle. Chucky. Brahms. You’ve probably heard of at least one of these dolls who have come to life and played a sinister role in their movies. What if I told you there was a video game that replicates this?
Poppy Playtime is a first-person puzzle-horror game developed by MOB Games, released this October. The game has taken over social media platforms recently as mainstream youtubers like Jacksepticeye, Markiplier, and CoryxKenshin post their enticing playthroughs of the indie game. Players interact as an ex-employee of Playtime Co., an abandoned toy factory haunted by a mysterious mass disappearance. So far, only the first chapter has been released and is playable. Even so, Poppy Playtime manages to captivate viewers through stunning visual graphics and innovative storytelling.
Visual aesthetics in horror games have always played a part in generating atmosphere, but Poppy Playtime brings something new to the table. At first glance, the darkness and dingy atmosphere of the game don’t seem like anything new to the horror game scene. However, the quick camera turns combined with motion blur progressively create a sense of franticness. The horror game takes into account shadows, detailed textures, and light filtering, providing a surreal experience for viewers and players alike. Moreover, the joyous childlike construction alongside dirt and abandonment at every corner create an unnerving sense of familiarity—a false sense of security.
Not only are the visual aspects phenomenal, but the storyline also manages to leave players wanting more. The main antagonist of the first episode is a ten feet tall, blue, furry “toy” by the name of Huggy Wuggy. Huggy Wuggy first appears with an eerily big smile on his face, contributing to the already unsettling atmosphere the game generates. However, the creature soon disappears, leaving players on edge. Instead of cheap jumpscares to generate fear, suspense is built through several different encounters in the factory, such as hints of the creature’s haunting presence along with cryptic posters throughout the map, ending in a thrilling chase through tight, maze-like vents. An assisting method of storytelling presents itself through various tapes found in the abandoned building. These VHS tapes are reminiscent of an ’80s style analog-horror, offering a glimpse into the dark world of Playtime Co.
Poppy Playtime offers a unique twist in the horror game genre, not only through its visual style but also through its uniquely creepy narration. It is no wonder that the game has blown up for people of all ages, as the game itself is as entertaining as it is thrilling. I highly recommend buying the game, but watching playthroughs of it is just as enjoyable. The second chapter is speculated to come out March, 2022. Be sure to check it out!
