The global rise of K-pop has showcased one of the many aspects of Korean culture to the world. As one of the fastest-growing music markets, factors such as the selling of albums and merchandise, concert revenue, and streaming make the industry extremely lucrative, making billions of dollars every year. The K-pop landscape is always changing, with rookie groups debuting, veteran groups making comebacks, and new hits topping the charts.
K-pop groups are often split into generations depending on the year they debut, with the fifth gen starting roughly in 2023. Several of these groups have already become extremely popular, with one such example being CORTIS, which debuted in August of last year. Known for their hip-hop-influenced sound and self-produced music, the Big Hit Music boy band notably had their first EP, Color Outside the Lines, debut at number 15 on Billboard 200, and were the first K-pop group to perform at an NBA All-Star Game. The group was also named “Best New Artist” at the MAMA Awards, showcasing how established their popularity has already become. Personally, I am really impressed with their stage presence and dance skills, and their live performances have been really impressive to watch.

Two other promising fifth-gen groups that debuted last year are girl groups Hearts2Hearts and KiiiKiii. Hearts2Hearts was SM Entertainment’s first girl group in five years, and just a year after their debut, the eight-member band already has eight million monthly listeners on Spotify, and nearly a billion total views on YouTube. Their latest song “RUDE!”, released in February, has five music show wins. The group has a very dance-pop inspired style and a high-energy, upbeat discography. Starship Entertainment’s KiiiKiii has also enjoyed widespread success; the five-member band released their latest EP “Delulu Pack”, with single “404 (New Era)” ranking number one in monthly streams on Circle Chart. Their music, especially in this extended play, incorporates early 2000’s synth-pop elements, and is catchy and unique.
K-pop continues to evolve, and the different trends, fresh concepts, and new releases showcase how it is such a fun and exciting genre of music. I definitely look forward to what the rest of 2026 has in store musically, especially from these fifth-gen groups.
