Project Hail Mary has been released in theaters, starring Ryan Gosling as Dr. Ryland Grace, a science teacher forced to become an astronaut. Waking up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or what he is doing, and as the only surviving astronaut, he slowly starts to piece together his past.
At first, Dr. Grace, a molecular biologist, is tasked with studying an alien organism. However, through these experiments, Grace discovers that “Astrophage” is eating the sun away, putting human extinction just 30 years away. After a fatal accident kills his research team, he is forced into a major role on the international task force. He struggles to gain awareness of what has occurred to him aboard the spaceship until he quickly learns he’s on a one-way mission. Out in space, he encounters another spaceship following him, only to find that he is not alone; there is more alien life. The other spaceship is inhabited by a sole alien, whom he names Rocky.
The two soon find out they are in search of the same thing: a solution to get rid of the star-eating Astrophage in order to save their planets. A unique friendship is formed between Dr. Grace and Rocky. There is a Rocky movie reference where they find a planet that can help them, and they name it “Adrian.” Together, Dr. Grace and Rocky seek out a solution to save their planets and get Dr. Grace back to Earth. The ending is not what one would expect, but it is even more of a reason to go watch.

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, this movie will have you questioning Dr. Grace’s past, speculating on his current situation, and then laughing once Rocky gets the story rolling. This sci-fi film is a suspenseful, funny, and an emotional adventure through space that is absolutely worth watching.
