As an artist currently enrolled in AP 2D Art and Design, junior Yuna Han utilizes her creative talents both inside and outside the classroom.
While building her AP portfolio, Yuna has also been creating artwork for Allcove, a teen mental health organization. Allcove strives to provide youth throughout California with access to emotional, physical, social, and mental support services. Their initiative aims to foster community connection and provide a safe space for teenagers. Yuna has participated in numerous Allcove events to encourage amity among her peers and has contributed original pieces to the organization’s art exhibitions.
In a specific work showcased in her most recent exhibit, Yuna sought to instill a relaxed, “homey” feeling in her viewers. She describes the piece as a “cozy hideaway,” intended to feel warm and inviting. Through her art, she explains that because many teenagers are overwhelmed by extracurriculars and schoolwork, everyone deserves a sanctuary where they can escape their stressors.
Yuna notes that she used a palette of warm tones to emulate the effect of soft lighting and a fireside glow. However, she chose to incorporate twinkling fairy lights in the background rather than a literal fire to maintain a whimsical aesthetic. Additionally, she utilized charcoal to provide dimension and a hint of “dark edginess” to the leaves in the composition.
Through her art, Yuna not only strives to instill a warm feeling in her audience but also impact future generations and their mental health.
