Breaking into the music industry is no small feat. For alumni Trent Lawson (’20), that dream recently became reality when he appeared in Giveon’s “I CAN TELL” music video. What started as a passion in high school has carried him into the world of professional performance, and his story is one current students can draw inspiration from.
Trent described the filming process as both exciting and demanding. “It was a lot of fun, but also very intense,” he recalled. That meant hours of waiting, but once on set, there was no room for error. “Everyone is on a time crunch so it’s expected that whatever your role, you’re performing consistently, efficiently, and timely.” A professional set is fast-paced, and everyone involved is expected to be ready when called. Still, while the day required patience and precision, the reward was worth it: the chance to perform alongside a chart topping R&B artist.

For current students dreaming of similar opportunities, Trent emphasizes the importance of initiative. “The biggest thing is putting yourself out there. That means doing your research and seeing what projects are being made in your area,” he encouraged. He also stressed the importance of persistence and outreach. “If you really like a certain artist and have dreams of working with them, try reaching out to the artist’s manager. See how you can get involved and connected with the kind of art you love to consume and the people that make it.”
It’s advice rooted in his own journey. Trent admits that in high school, it was easy to get distracted by what everyone else was doing. When asked what he would tell his past self, he said, “I would probably tell high school Trent to continue to take your dreams and your passions seriously. I would tell him not to get caught up in what everyone else is doing and stay focused on his dreams. It’s never too early to start working towards your artistic goals and the life that you want to create for yourself.” His words are a reminder to current students that it’s never too early to start. Whether in music, film, sports, or any other field, pursuing passion with dedication can open doors in unexpected places. Trent’s story is proof that alumni from Mitty can find themselves on stages and sets far beyond our campus.

Even now, Trent continues to push forward. He is currently working as a performer with Disney Cruise Line, a contract that has taken put him in front of diverse audiences to share his art. Though life on a “massive boat” as he described it, leaves little time for side projects, his focus remains sharp. “Once I’m back in California, I hope to continue to dedicate more time to writing and producing my own music,” he said.
Trent’s journey is a reminder that dreams can start here and grow into something bigger. His journey shows that with persistence, courage, and the willingness to put yourself out there, the possibilities are wide open. And if you’re curious about what comes next, Trent invites you to keep an eye out for his work. His story is still being written, and this is only the start.
