Tesla Cybertruck: Bold Vision or Bitter Fall?

Evaluating Tesla’s new Cybertruck and how it may pose more than an aesthetic problem to society
Tesla Cybertruck: Bold Vision or Bitter Fall?

Imagine a truck designed by a 10-year-old with nothing but a ruler and a failed dream. That’s the Tesla Cybertruck. While there has been speculation over whether the vehicle resembles a motorized refrigerator or Elon Musk’s body, the Tesla Cybertruck is an undisputed eyesore.

So why is the Cybertruck so bad? Despite its supposed durability and electric efficiency, the cons of the Cybertruck greatly outweigh the so-called “benefits”. In a recent market research poll, over 71% of people displayed a negative or indifferent opinion towards the vehicle. The main animosities lie with its aesthetic, practicality, market position, and inconsistent branding.

The Cybertruck’s design is incredibly polarizing, with its sharp, angular, and metallic shell representing something out of a sci-fi movie rather than a practical, everyday vehicle. It provokes aversion from regular onlookers, in spite of its costly price of nearly $90,000. You’d think that such an expensive car should at least provide buyers with a design that feels polished and refined; however, the Cybertruck doesn’t at all.

Onto its practicality: frankly, there is none. Due to its massive size, the Cybertruck becomes extremely difficult to handle in urban environments, with the main hassle being parking and navigating tight spaces. This gives the Cybertruck little to no clear competitive advantage over existing trucks on the market.

Furthering its competitive disadvantage, the Cybertruck has no clear market position, with major confusion surrounding its target audience. Is the Cybertruck meant for just anyone? It doesn’t quite seem so and here’s why. Traditional truck buyers prefer utility and functionality, an aspect that the Cybertruck doesn’t provide. This includes concerns over whether the Cybertruck can outperform traditional trucks in the aspects of durability, off-road maneuvering, range and charging infrastructure, familiar features, attachments, and more. Many reporters have pointed out that the Cybertruck doesn’t necessarily stand out in any of these criteria, in comparison to other, more traditional trucks. On the other hand, tech enthusiasts find the design too bulky and off-putting, preferring the more elegant, subtle, and user-friendly looks of the Tesla Model 3 or Model S.

The Cybertruck also has had inconsistent branding. Tesla built up a lot of hype surrounding the Cybertruck’s “futuristic features.” However, consumers actually prefer more practical features such as a comfortable interior and better range. By not including various features, the Cybertruck seems to be diluting the core appeal of Tesla, championed in its previous, more popular models.

Lastly, we’ve all probably seen this video of the unveiling of the Tesla Cybertruck in 2019, where Elon Musk and designer Franz von Holzhausen, to their surprise, cracked the so-called “bulletproof” windows of a Cybertruck by throwing a steel ball at it. Seen by millions worldwide, this from the start proved that the Cybertruck did not maintain the flawless reputation for safety that Musk had championed. By prioritizing novelty over functionality, the Cybertruck undermines its potential to be a versatile, everyday vehicle, ultimately falling short of being the groundbreaking innovation it was hyped up to be.
