On the night of Monarch Madness 2024, the already fired up crowd of students gathered in the San Jose Civic Center exploded into cheers after learning that the Women’s Soccer team had secured the Norcal CIF division 1 championship title. After failing to capture the CCS title, this victory over Saint Francis and Del Oro High School to win the CIF title was a very sweet end to a hard fought season.
This year, as they lace up their cleats and don the black and gold jerseys, the women’s soccer team again has their eyes set on another successful upcoming season.
With returning varsity members, talented freshman, national team players, and D1 prospects, the team lineup is looking very promising. Multiple players have already been pulled up to attend national team camps, one of whom—freshman Chloe Miller—plays for the US U15 national team. “I never thought I’d make it there,” she says when asked about her rise to the highest level of competition. Miller’s prowess is an integral piece of the national team’s success, currently an impressive 4-0 in the 2024 season.
Bringing this into the Mitty team, her and recent Columbia commit junior Angie Cao play as the team’s two center defenders. Together, they set the foundation for the powerhouse that is the Mitty women’s soccer team.
The team kicked off its season with a heavily anticipated match up against Sequoia High School. After a close loss last year, the Sequoia players came back looking for blood. A slip up in front of the goal led to Sequoia being up a goal coming out of the first half. Despite their clearly dominant performance, even the best are susceptible to the most basic errors. The first goal of the season being one against them wasn’t exactly what the 2024 norcal champions envisioned for their season opener. However, this unexpected setback seemed to be exactly what the Monarchs needed to open the flood gates that they had been holding back. In quick succession, the Monarchs scored three goals to bring the game back for a very satisfactory 3-1 victory. This forward momentum was kept into the next couple of games, with a 3-0 win over Burlingame followed by a tight 2-1 victory over Piedmont.
The Monarchs now sit in a promising position, with multiple confidence building wins under their belt. They will continue to build their skills up as they work towards the ultimate goal of winning CCS.
