Loki Season 1 was perhaps one of the only good series that came out of recent Marvel productions, being funny and creative. Because of how spectacular Season 1 was, expectations were high for the newest second season which launched in mid-October on Disney+, and Marvel delivered once again. This six-episode release expands upon its previous plot and adds new main characters, comedic personas that mesh well with the original cast.
One strong aspect of this season is its incorporation of different time periods. The characters go to London in 1977 and a small town in 1982, among others. The scenery and cinematography perfectly capture each time period’s qualities. At the Chicago’s World Fair in 1893, numerous people dressed in rigidly proper clothing and top hats. There was also faint classical music and an iris shot, something typically used in older films. Additionally, within these different settings, we learned more about the characters’ past and understand their backgrounds, making the show more engaging. For instance, we learn of Mobius, Loki’s partner, and his former life of being a content single dad.
But no show is picture perfect. As much there is to love in this new season, there are some downsides as well. Towards the end, it became quite repetitive as Loki keeps on going back in time lasting the course of 2-3 episodes—almost half of the season. This is a big disappointment because we want the show to end with something more.
Overall, Loki’s new season is solid, maintaining Season 1’s good qualities, like its comedy and cinematography, while having a few drawbacks. I hope that Marvel can make more similar comebacks with its films, and I can’t wait to see what happens next with Loki.
